Architecture and Windows in Lexington

A Rich Legacy Built By Innovation

Lexington was a hub for farming and trading in the 1780s, which made it one of the first settlements in this area.

Rapid growth came in the early 1800s as Lexington focused on agriculture. They were known especially for tobacco, hemp, and horses. By the 1830s, Lexington had grown to one of the largest and wealthiest towns in our region.

As we came out of the Civil War era, Lexington began to modernize as railroads, factories, and neighborhoods were built. Of course, horses remained a staple of Lexington culture. Breeding farms and racetracks were prevalent, which led to Lexington often being called the Horse Capital of the World.

The University of Kentucky was established in 1965 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky and grew over time into what it is today.

Many of these themes are prevalent in Lexington today. Commonly referred to as the "Athens of the West" thanks to its history, universities, and culture.

Architectural Distinction

Common architectural styles found in Lexington homes are Federal & Greek revival, Victorian, and Tudor & Colonial Revival.

Lexington has a lot of historic neighborhoods that are often brick homes with balanced facades, transoms and sidelights. Also common are asymmetric layouts, turrets, and wraparound turrets.

More recent home styles include craftsman bungalows, ranch-style, and split-level homes. These types of homes became more common in the mid-20th century.

Some of the more contemporary suburbs have Neo-colonial and modern farmhouses. These types of homes showcase open floor plans, large windows, and stone or brick exteriors.

Window Styles in Lexington

Due to the vast diversity of home styles in Lexington, you'll see many different types of windows throughout the city. Some of the most common styles are listed below.

Double-hung windows have two movable sashes and are often prevalent in the historic buildings and homes in the area. The timeless aesthetic and great airflow and ventilation control make double-hung windows a popular choice. This is the most common window style in this area.

Casement windows are hinged at the sides and open outward, which makes them great for mid-century modern homes. As a result of not having an easily accessible horizontal opening, casement windows provide enhanced security benefits because they are more difficult to break into.

Bay windows are prevalent in Lexington because they were commonly inlcuded in the Victorian-style homes from the 1800s. The angled windows add a beautiful look to these historic homes.
